DESCRIPTION:
Today we have a 60 year old Tenareze made from Ugni Blanc grapes. The Domaine Rounagle is located in Larroque-sur-l'Osse which is close to Condom.
They have not only Armagnac. Hugues, the owner of the Domaine, produces also wine and (soon) whisky. A Domaine which I also want to visit in the near future.
COLOUR:
Dark straw
NOSE:
Not the typical Tenareze nose. I have a lot of powerful herbs like heather, thyme and bay leaves. Also, there is this wonderful freshness and cooling like from eucalyptus. Very difficult to find any fruitness in here. Maybe some mirabelle. But the herbalness is the dominant part here.
PALATE:
Wow, first sip is so completely different to the nose. First moment, when it touched my tongue, there is immediately this sweetness. Well, it's more like a very sweet and thick sirup. But then, just after half of a second, you can feel the whole power from the wood into your mouth. I have here some spicyness like very strong ginger or even some red chili. This one has only 41,6 % alc.? I almost can't believe it. Second sip is a little bit more relaxed. But it stays powerful and again it's difficult to find any fruitness in here. Some juicy orange, if you like.
FINISH:
Again very sweet and powerful. There is this beautyful sirupy feeling, which clues on your cheek. The woodness is also very present here. Some licorice and the herbs from the nose repeat in the finish.
OVERALL IMPRESSION:
Well, what should I say? I never had a Armagnac like this one. It's a completely different Tenareze, than what I am used to. It reminds me a little bit on an old sherry cask whisky with a lot of wood influence.
Very difficult to give any points here. If you like your Armagnac with a fruity flavor, then this one is probably not for you. If you like a strong and powerful Armaganc with a lot of woodiness, here you go.
